One trip that works for every generation
Illumia Travel plans multigenerational family vacations, so grandparents, parents and kids can all have the trip they were hoping for, together. You work with one dedicated advisor who handles the details, balances everyone's different wants, and takes the planning weight off whoever usually carries it.
We have a lot of experience planning travel with a focus on multigenerational families, from Walt Disney World and cruises to river cruises and Europe. We understand that the biggest challenge is rarely the destination. It's getting everyone's needs, ages and budgets to fit on one itinerary.
Why these trips are hard, and how we plan around it
Most multigenerational trips stall for the same few reasons. Here is what we do about each one.
| The challenge | What We Do |
|---|---|
| Different ages and energy levels | Build each day around a mix of shared moments and optional downtime, so no one is pushed and no one is left out. |
| Different Interests | Learn what each person is hoping for, then weave it in, so the grandparent, the teen and the organizer each get a favorite. |
| Mobility and Comfort | Choose rooms, transportation and pacing around the group's real needs, and flag where stairs, walking or long days could be a problem. |
| Several households and budgets | Keep rooms, payments and deadlines clear, so each household knows what it is responsible for. |
| Too Many Opinions | Ask your group to name one or two points of contact up front, so decisions don't get lost. |
| Dining and Special Occasions | Plan meals around everyone's needs and tell suppliers early about celebrations and dietary needs. |
The parent who ends up planning for everyone shouldn't also be the one who is exhausted by the trip. Our job is to carry that weight, so you can enjoy it too.
Trips that work for every generation
These are the trip styles we recommend most often for multi-age groups, and why each one works.
| Trip | Why it works for a multigenerational group |
|---|---|
| Walt Disney World | Something for every age, with dining, park days and downtime planned in advance so no one is overwhelmed. |
| Disney Cruise Line | One ship and many options. You unpack once, and each generation can choose its own pace each day. |
| Adventures by Disney | Expert Adventure Guides handle logistics, kids are engaged and grandparents are comfortable. |
| River cruises, including Christmas markets sailings | A smaller ship, a new city each morning and no repacking. A close-knit feel suits groups of friends and families alike. |
| All-inclusive resorts | Meals, activities and space together in one place, so there are fewer daily decisions for the group. |
| Ireland and other custom journeys | A trip designed around your group's pace, with a driver or guide handling the roads. |
What we tell every family organizer
- 1.
Name one or two decision-makers early. A group of fifteen can't choose by committee. Pick the people who will confirm decisions and share them with everyone else.
- 2.
Ask every household for one must-do and one deal-breaker. Do this before choosing a destination. It prevents most disagreements later.
- 3.
Protect downtime. The youngest and oldest travelers usually need it most. Shared meals and a few shared highlights matter more than a packed schedule.
- 4.
Choose a base when you can. Fewer hotel changes means less packing, and easier days for everyone.
- 5.
Start earlier than you think. Large groups need rooms near each other, and the best availability goes first, especially in peak season.
- 6.
Make sure everyone is protected. With several households traveling, travel insurance is an easy way to keep one change of plans from becoming a family-wide problem. We'll help you choose a plan.
- 7.
Let us carry the details. That's what we're here for.
Questions families ask us
It means two or more generations of a family traveling together, such as grandparents, parents and grandchildren. The best trips give each generation something to love while keeping the group together.
It depends on your ages, interests and pace. Walt Disney World, Disney Cruise Line, Adventures by Disney, river cruises, all-inclusive resorts and a custom trip to a place like Ireland all work well. We will recommend the one that fits your group.
Group travel is one of our specialties, from small family gatherings to big reunions. We've planned it all!
We ask early who needs what, then choose rooms, transportation and daily pacing to match. We'll point out where stairs, long walks or full days could be difficult, and build in rest.
In many cases, yes, though payment options vary by supplier. We'll explain how it works for your trip before you book.
As early as you can. Many families begin nine to twelve months ahead, and the larger the group, the earlier we recommend starting.
Our planning services are complimentary for many of our travelers, thanks to our supplier partnerships. For new clients and highly customized itineraries, a planning fee may apply, depending on the requirements of your trip. The fee reflects the personal time your advisor puts into planning, booking and supporting your trip, from your first conversation through your return home. Your initial consultation is complimentary, and we'll let you know upfront whether a planning fee applies to your trip before any planning begins.
